In spite of the overwhelming odds related to such ridiculous growth, we are able to thrive with a small technical team by leveraging MongoDB, Microsoft MVC, Angular, and NServiceBus. In this talk, we will review the backstory of MDL, technology stack, schema design, code, tools, and operational gotchas as we moved from SQL Server to MongoDB.

Hermes: Free the Data! Distributed Computing with MongoDB

Moving data throughout an organization is an art form. Whether mastering the art of ETL or building micro services, we are often left with either business logic embedded where it doesn't belong or monolithic apps that do too much. In this talk, we will show you how we built a persisted messaging bus to ‘Free the Data’ from the apps, making it available across the organization without having to write custom ETL code. This in turn makes it possible for business apps to be standalone, testable and more reliable. We will discuss the basic architecture and how it works, go through some code samples (server side and client side), and present some statistics and visualizations.

ECMAScript 6 and the Node Driver

ECMAScript 6 (ES6) is getting closer and closer with more support available in both node 0.12.0 and io.js. ES6 promises to fundamentally change the way we develop applications on node.js by allowing for the use of generators for iterators and a standard promises library for orchestrating our asynchronous calls. In this talk we will explore the implications of ES6 for the node driver and applications written on top of the driver.

Introduction to the New Asynchronous API in the .NET Driver

The latest version of the .NET driver introduces a new API that supports asynchronous programming. In this talk we will discuss why asynchronous programming is beneficial. When writing a server application, asynchronous programming results in server applications that can handle larger workloads with fewer threads. When writing a client application with a user interface, asynchronous programming is a convenient way to keep the client application from blocking and becoming unresponsive. We will discuss the new asynchronous driver API and look at lots of sample code.

Advanced Administration, Monitoring and Backup

Sailthru has been using MongoDB for 4 years, pushing the system to scale. Maintaining a high degree of client-side customizability while growing aggressively has posed unique challenges to our infrastructure. We have maintained high uptime and performance by using monitoring that covers expected use patterns as well as monitoring that catches edge cases for new and unexpected access to the database. In this session, we will talk about Sailthru's use of MongoDB Management Service (MMS), as well as areas in which we have implemented custom monitoring and alerting tools. I will also discuss our transition from a hybrid backup solution using on-premise hardware and AWS snapshots, to using backups with MMS, and how this has benefited Sailthru.
